Troubleshooting

A note takes a while to open, or won’t open offline

It’s probably in iCloud but not on your phone yet. iCloud lists every file, but only downloads a file when it’s needed. mdvju shows these notes in the list and downloads them when you open one, which needs a connection.

To keep a whole folder on the phone, open the Files app, touch and hold the folder, and choose Keep Downloaded (iOS 18 and later). Videos in particular need to be downloaded before they play.

I can’t tick a checkbox

If mdvju says “Can’t save changes in this folder”, the app that owns the folder doesn’t let other apps change its files. mdvju won’t work around that, and your note isn’t changed. See When ticking doesn’t work.

If mdvju says “Couldn’t update checkbox”, the note changed since you opened it, for example on another device. mdvju doesn’t write over newer changes. It has already reloaded the note, so tick again.

My notes aren’t updating

mdvju shows what’s in the folder on your phone. If a change you made elsewhere isn’t there:

  1. Check the sync. Open the Files app and look at the note there. If it’s old there too, the change hasn’t reached your phone yet. For Obsidian Sync, open Obsidian once so it can sync. For iCloud, make sure the device you edited on is online.
  2. Come back to mdvju. It checks the note you’re reading every few seconds while it’s open, and refreshes when you return to it. It doesn’t check while it’s closed.

A new note doesn’t show up in the list

Same cause as above: the file needs to be in the folder on your phone first. Once it is, mdvju adds it when it next looks at the folder: when you come back to the app, and every 30 seconds while you’re using it. There’s no refresh button; closing and reopening the app also makes it look again.

The note it points to isn’t in the folder mdvju is reading. That happens when the link points to another vault, to a note that was renamed, or to a file mdvju can’t show. mdvju reads one folder at a time.

mdvju says “Folder unavailable”

mdvju couldn’t open your folder when it started. The folder may have been moved, renamed or deleted, or iOS may have stopped letting mdvju use it. Tap Choose the folder again and pick it.

If the folder really was moved or renamed, mdvju treats it as a new folder, so your favourites and Homepage for it start empty.

Still stuck?

In mdvju’s Settings, tap Send Feedback. It opens a new email to us in the Mail app, with the app version and your iPhone model already filled in; add what you tried and send it.

Or email support@mdvju.app with what you tried, your iPhone model and iOS version, and the app version (in mdvju’s Settings › Version, near the top).
