What’s next
This is what I’d like mdvju to do after the first release. It’s a list of plans, not promises, and there are no dates on purpose. What gets built first depends on what people ask for and on whether the app pays its way.
Everything on this page is not in the app today. For what mdvju does now, see the home page and the user guide.
Your own mdvju server, free and open source
A small server you run yourself, at home or on your own machine, that reads your notes folder and serves it to mdvju. It will be published on GitHub as open source, with documentation, for free, once it’s tested and packaged. Contributions welcome.
What it would add over reading a folder on the phone: seeing who changed what, when your notes are worked on by several people or tools, and reading notes that don’t live on your phone at all.
A hosted service, for people who’d rather not run a server
The same server features, run for you. Because someone keeps it running, this is the one part of mdvju that would be paid over time rather than once: pay once for the app, pay over time only for a service. It’s also where live updates would come in: a notification when a note changes, even while the app is closed. How it’s priced isn’t decided.
End-to-end encryption is planned for it: your notes encrypted with a key only your devices hold, so the server stores files it can’t read.
Reading and finding
- Search the full text of all your notes, not just their names.
- Bookmarks to a place inside a note, not just to the whole note, and support for the bookmarks you already keep in Obsidian.
- A tree view of your folders, like a desktop file explorer, opening right at the note you’re reading.
- Read aloud: listen to a note instead of reading it.
More places to read from
- Several sources side by side: more than one folder, or a folder and a server.
- Git repositories: read the docs in your own GitHub, GitLab or Gitea repos, always read-only.
- A home screen widget listing recently changed notes. Tap one and it opens in mdvju.
Accessibility
Full VoiceOver support, polished and tested across the whole app, in one of the 1.x updates. Much of it works already; I want it to work everywhere before I promise it.
Other devices
- Android.
- A Garmin watch companion, to control read-aloud from your wrist: pause, play, change speed, jump back a sentence or to the previous heading.
